What does Mallorca have to offer?
Area
The name Mallorca normally conjures up images of the typical summer holiday, however it is also home to great sport climbing and world famous Deep Water Soloing (DWS). There are 3 major climbing areas in Mallorca; North-Western, South-Western and Eastern Mallorca. Due to the small size of the island they are all easily accessible. The areas do have some stylistic differences; South-Western and North-West Mallorca offer lots of good quality sport climbing and trad climbing. Eastern Mallorca is a great spot for deep water soloing; a nice way to spend a hot day on the beach.
The sport routes are all relatively new and, as a result, 35m routes are not uncommon (bring a 70-80m rope). The number and proximity of crags make it possible to climb a variety of different styles. The area is still quite new and continually being developed. As climbers put up new routes all over the island, it keeps getting better and better.
Season
The typical climbing season is October to April, the summer is ferociously hot in Mallorca so only DWS is possible during this period. The island will also be busier during the peak tourist months.
Amenities
The island is dotted with little towns - Soller, Andraxt and Santanyi are close to the most popular climbing areas. They all have a supermarket, restaurants, bars, and banks. The island is so small that getting to places is never a problem and you are rarely more than 45 minutes from the capital city Palma, which offers every attraction and distraction you could need.
Getting there and away
Flying into Palma is the easiest way to get to Mallorca. Renting a car is advised to take in the full variety of climbing. It is also possible to take your car on the ferry to Ibiza. This gives you the option of exploring two of the Balearic Islands in one holiday.
