What does El Chorro have to offer?
First developed in the mid 90's, El Chorro has classic single pitches alongside a handful of nice sized bolted multi-pitches. The most famous route is ‘Lourdes’ (F8a) but if you ask the average climber then they will tell you that Bladerunner (F6a - pictured above) is the must climb route. Due to the number of routes approaching 35m in the area it is worth taking a 70-80m rope to ensure you can take on everything when you get there.
El Chorro is famed for its spectacular gorge and the wonderfully exposed ‘Camino Del Rey’. Originally built as a short cut for workers between the Chorro and Gaitanejo Falls, it has now been taken over by climbers as a convenient shortcut to the crags beyond the gorge. The truly unique ‘via ferrata’ is not to be missed.
Season
Located in the south of Spain, El Chorro is a fantastic winter climbing destination. The season starts in October and runs through to May. Temperatures in the 40's make summer climbing impossible.
Amenities
El Chorro has a few shops where you can buy the basics along with a couple of small bars. The nearest town Alora is a 15 minute drive and has a full size supermarket (Mercadona) along with bars, restaurants and cafes. Malaga is the closest city at 1 hour away, with everything you would expect from a major European city.
The proximity to the coast makes a mid-week climbing break a great option. The spectacular town of Granada is about 2 hours away and a great place to explore the North African influence on Spanish architecture and cuisine.
Getting there and away
Malaga is the nearest airport. El Chorro is unique in that a car is not necessary - a train runs direct from Malaga. However those wishing to get the most out of their trip by visiting some other interesting (and quieter) crags can rent a car at the airport. El Chorro is an hour’s drive away.
